Do you pay to hire an agent to help you buy a home?

Nope!
This is the biggest misconception about realtors.

How do they get paid then?

The sellers initially agree to pay their agent at time of listing.

When a buyer comes along represented by their own agent, that commission is split.

If you buy the property with no agent, the listing agent gets the full commission. No better "deal" for the buyer or the seller.

So in short, there is no reason why a buyer would not have their own agent to represent them and protect their interests.
